Every decade or so there comes along a fictional character that sets a tone and a mood that will live on perhaps forever. Don Vito Corleone (The Godfather) did just that in the 70s and Gordon Gekko (Wall Street) likewise in the 1980s. Both of these are anti heroes personified and to be honest quite unpleasant to boot.
Today we learned that James Gandolfini has passed away at the age of just 51. He played Tony Soprano, the lead character in The Sopranos, in case you didn't know.
He played that part quite brilliantly. He was the face of the show and easily recognisable to those who didn't watch the show or simply dipped in and out. Gandolfini and the script writers gave us a character we couldn't hate no matter how evil he acted.
Face facts, Tony Soprano was a murderer, a misogynist, a sociopath and a serial adulterer, to name but a few of his less demeaning traits. But you couldn't dislike him one iota. In fact you probably admired him and and felt very protective of him as the series went on.
Gandofini will rightly go down as playing one of the great roles for his portrayal of such a tortured soul. It was acting at it's very finest, just think back to his breakdown and how you physically felt his depression at that particular point.
The Sopranos was brilliant, there is no doubting that but Gandofini made that show the same as Brando and Douglas made the other pieces I mention earlier.
It's now time to revisit The Sopranos for the third time but this time with a heavy heart.
